Geologists consider that Baikal existed in the end of the Paleogene Period. It originated 30-35 million years ago. In the PreBaikal period the relief was less contrasted thаn nowaday but it was still mountanoius. In the picture: the Maloye Sea, the picture was taken from Olkhon Island.
